We audit a lot of local service sites, and the same five gaps show up again and again — long before anything as advanced as link building matters.
1. One page trying to rank for everything
If you offer five services across three areas, you need pages built around that structure — not a single "Services" page hoping to rank for fifteen different search intents at once.
2. Missing or thin service-area pages
"Serving the greater metro area" doesn't rank. Dedicated, genuinely useful pages for each service area you actually work in do.
3. No structured data
Schema markup for services, reviews, and business info helps search engines understand — and often visually enhance — your listings. It's a low-effort, high-leverage fix most sites skip entirely.
4. An inconsistent Google Business Profile
Mismatched business name, address, or phone number across your website, GBP, and directory listings quietly undermines local ranking signals that matter more than most on-page factors.
5. No content plan beyond the homepage
A handful of well-targeted blog posts answering the actual questions your customers search before hiring — "how much does X cost," "how long does Y take" — consistently outperforms sites with zero content strategy, even with a fraction of the domain authority.
Fix these five before you touch anything else. They're unglamorous, but they're the foundation everything else in SEO sits on top of.
